mmm. that mimosa looks good. i didn’t manage to sleep until 5:30 am, so i set my alarm to get up at 8:30 to start watching the inauguration - on my laptop in bed. i only just now got my coffee and pancakes together.

its been exciting so far. (i really liked the part when bush high-tailed it to texas!)

i’ve never paid attention to inaugurations - when was the last time one was so well well attended - ever?

The inauguration excitement has done little to dispel from my mind my amazement over last week’s beautifully executed emergency water landing of flight 1549. Supposedly Obama arranged for kick-ass pilot “Sully” Sullenberger and his wife to attend the inauguration in person. I wonder if they are there, and if he will be trotted out during the parade or the ball. i really want to get a glimpse of the man who made it so i can study the seat-back security card intently during takeoff without feeling like a total dork.

My alarm was set for 5:30. I checked it before I went to sleep. But somehow or another, it didn’t wake me up. I must have shut it off in my sleep without waking. I remember groggily looking at the clock, seeing it was 5:10 (or so I thought) and thinking I had 20 more minutes to sleep. Then I opened my eyes again, saw 5:21, and shut them again. Then my brain registered the reality of what I had seen, rather than what I had wanted to see. I jumped out of bed in a panic. It was 6:21! My bus comes at 6:29! The bus stop is three blocks away. Somehow, unbelievably, I made it! And I managed to pee and brush my teeth (simultaneously), and put on clean underwear. Of course I was good for nothing at work today. But that’s okay, ‘cause I am about to quit my job. Any day now.

"The Universe has as many different centers as there are living beings in it."

“The Universe has as many different centers as there are living beings in it.”

- Aleksandr I. Thank you for posting this Mills. Your blog was the first place I heard the news. I have been out of the loop I guess. The news hit me kinda hard for a minute, til I realized he had a nice long life - I hope I make it to 89.

Solzhenitsyn was a writer who was very influential to the course of my life. His work was the first material that made me politically aware. I was assigned A Day In The Life of Ivan Denisevich in 10th grade, and I loved it. I went to the school library and checked out all I could find by Solzhenitsyn - which wasn’t alot. Cancer Ward, The First Circle, and a collection of short stories I read. I read segments of August 1914 and bits of The Gulag Archipelago, which was the thickest paperback I owned for a long time (maybe still). I found in a used bookstore and read Sanya, which was a memoir about Solzhenitsyn by one of his wives, Natal Reshetovskaya. I was 14, and Solzhenitsyn was the first writer of adult literary material that interested me to such a degree. I became interested in Russian history, culture, and politics. I studied Russian language and culture in college for two years, joined the Russian club, and had a Russian roommate. I dressed like a Russian in a furry cap and big oversized wool coat. We drank vodka and I learned to sing rowdy Russian songs and the Soviet National Anthem. I listened to Victor Tsoi and Boris Grebenshekov. I finally moved on, and became interested in world affairs, history, languages and culture in general. I got my degree in anthropology, rather than Russian Studies. Ya ne gevaryu pa-Russkiy. But I never forgot Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

mills:

I’ve posted many quotes from, and writings about, Aleksander Solzhenitsyn. He is one of the most powerful writers I’ve read, and I cannot recommend him enough.

His obituary in the NYT … is a decent introduction to his fiercely moral view of art.

I haven’t been on Tumblr since… well… I don’t remember. I have been moving. It’s been hectic. Alot of readjusting. Its going well. I took some pictures to post after Cricket called me up and bugged me about not having blogged for a long time. I took some pictures of my new house, and the salmon curry I was making for dinner. But I can’t get the $5 camera to hook up to the computer software. I might have to reinstall the driver, but not tonight! I have already been online for hours, dealing with change of address stuff, bill stuff, internet account stuff. Bleh. I am going to go to bed and veg out with a marathon BBC drama viewing session, red wine, dark (90%) chocolate, and various other vices that I can’t live without.

Cute! I liked it when Picard was riding piggy back on Yoda’s shoulders. It made the Yoda-Picard phenomenon stand as tall as Aragorn and pose a truly menacing threat to the King. I recently introduced Lt. Commander Data to the scene, but took him with when I moved out. He was one of my early crushes, and I’ve had his action figure since I was ten or so. Weird huh? A crush on an android. Even before he got that emotion chip, and started having sex and stuff.

A metaphysical system is not useful to an artist based on its rational accuracy, and the poetry and entrenched iconography of religious art can be extremely moving in the credential context of the believing painter).”

I couldn’t figure out how to directly reblog this image, since it was posted as a subimage (I just made up a word) to another image (of creepy crucifixions framed by nuclear cooling towers) which I didn’t want to reblog. But I sat in the shade of the orchard yesterday and read a chapter from James Frazier’s The Golden Bough about European harvest traditions of catching the “corn-mother”, the “corn-maiden” or “the old man” (depending on the locale), the Asian “rice-mother” traditions, and the native American maize-mother”. The spirit that drives the growing and fruiting of the fields is/was believed to be caught up the the last sheaf of grain that was harvested, which was bound up, often in the shape of a person, and sometimes with a real person inside it) and honored at the harvest dance as the embodiment of the natural force that makes the grain grow. There was alot more about it; I am summarizing. This picture reminds me of that, but with a weird creepy subtext of the harvest as a metaphor for “God’s” harvesting of human souls at the end of the world, based on how well they adhered to some code of morality. I much prefer the pagan pastoralist version. The growing of the grain is something to celebrate indeed. The end of the world - I don’t have time to worry about that. I am too busy living. “God’s” judgment - I feel that if I am to be judged, it will be not only on how I treated others, but also on how well I lived, how deeply I loved, and how devotedly I celebrated life and the force that creates and sustains it.
